Player profile: Andrey Arshavin (Arsenal)

The beloved Shava of Russians ((Andrey Arshavin) is one of the player who have leading number of fans in EPL. He has been selected as the subsequent Player of the Season of Arsenal from just a dozen matches he played for the team.

One of the thrilling matches in EPL, held on April 21 2009 at Anfield stadium, between Arsenal and Liverpool, was rarest in its kind. Liverpool scored 4, but Arsenal replied with the same count. Andrey Arshavin alone scored 4 brilliant goals and became the first player to score 4 league goals at Anfield stadium since 1946. A rare repetition of history after 53 years, (earlier Dennis Westcott scored 4 goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1946). Shava became the 6th player who scored 4 goals in a match.

Andrei Sergeyevich Arshavin, born as son of Sergey, an amateur football player from St. Petersburg, on May 29 1981. The nick name Shava bestowed by fans of his earlier club Zenit St. Petersburg FC, his hometown club. Arshavin began playing football at an early age of 7 and was enrolled in the Smena Football academy of Zenit FC. He secured room in Zenit’s senior squad in the year 2000, and started with a 3-0 win on English team Bradford City in the Intertoto Cup. Arshavin is a versatile player who showed excellence in various positions, as an attacking midfielder as well as as a powerful striker. He seized the Russian Premier League award for the player of the season mostly because of this versatile skill.

Zenit FC crowned the Russian Premier League in 2007 on the shoulder of Shava by which his popularity reached in new heights. He scored 11 goals in 30 matches and made assistance for another 11 goals. It was a real credit to Zenith, who won the RPL championship since 1984, after a long 23 years. The performance in Euro cup 2008, made a line up of major Europian clubs for Shava. In June 2008, FC Barcelona proposed their €15 mn offer, Tottenham Hotspur's offered a £16 mn, but Zenit management were not ready to compromise with their asking price(£22 mn) and the transaction deferred. But Shava reached in Arsenal camp dramatically just before hours to conclude the Winter Transfer Window of 2009.

Arsenal welcomed Shava with the jersey number 23 of Sol Campbell. He played his first game for Arsenal against Sunderland in February 2009. The game ended with a goal less draw. In March 2009, Arshavin scored his first Arsenal goal against Blackburn Rovers in the 1st minute, 2nd goal at 65th minute, offered a 4–0 win to Arsenal. Arshavin captained Arsenal for the first time on 2 May 2009 in an away match against Portsmouth where they won 3–0 with Arshavin’s two assists and a penalty.

He was awarded EPL Player of the Month for April. He was also voted as Arsenal's Player Of the Month for April and came in second in Arsenal's Player of the Season Poll. The real surprising factor behind these achievements are, he entered only in the 2nd half of the season and was played less than a quarter for Arsenal.

Arshavin joined in the Russian national team in May 2002. His first goal came in a friendly match with Romania on 13 February 2003. Since then, he has managed to score in almost all the matches where they played. Arshavin promoted as Russia’s official Captain by manager Guus Hiddink in June 2009. Despite injury concerns, Andrey Arshavin showed an overwhelming performance during Russia's recent match with Wales.

Arshavin was sidelined after an injury bothering him since the match at Old Trafford. The re-injury took place during Russia-Wales match in which he played whole 90 minutes. Russia won a 3-1 victory over Wales, but was certainly unfortunate for Arsenals’ already hurting lineup. But Arshavin proved again by scoring a goal against Blackburn Rovers in a recent league match (Arsenal-6, Blackburn Rovers -2)

Arsene Wenger, the most successful and longest serving manager in the history of Arsenal, says about Shava. "Arshavin is an intelligent player and he looks like he is a shrewd street player because he creates something always in unexpected situations. He has a big challenge in front of him. He made Zenit win and, if he makes Arsenal win, he'll become an all-time great. He has something specific to him that he uses well - a low centre of gravity, great pace and tricky dribble. Arshavin can exist in the same category as Messi and Ronaldo, he just needs the trophies to prove it.”
